Preparing Your Child to Swim

Getting Your Baby Accustomed to the Water

It is an amazing fact that of all mammals, only humans lack the instinct to swim. We are by nature land oriented and so it is important to teach the art of swimming at an early age. A very early age!

Baby swimming lessons, such as we teach in our Boynton Beach, Coconut Creek, and Boca Raton locations, are beneficial from a safety standpoint in addition to ongoing fitness and simple enjoyment purposes. What your child learns about swimming as an infant will benefit them for life.

Any baby being introduced to swimming lessons should be as accustomed to the water as possible. One way to prepare children for baby swimming lessons is at home, using the bathtub to pour small amounts of warm water over the child's head so that it trickles down the face. Adding toys to the bath can help the infant, through motion and play, to begin to feel comfortable in the water. And when the baby is taken to their swim lessons, these same toys can act as a connection for the child to the warmth and safety of the home bath.

Remember – a child can learn to swim but they must first overcome any instinctive fears they may have. Your attention to their playtime at home can help prepare the way for a lifetime of enjoyment and fitness for your child through swimming.
